Olympics: Korea Sweeps Gold Medals in Archery
The Olympic medals in archery have now all been awarded. The competition wrapped up on August 4th with the Men’s Individual archery (recurve) event. There were some exciting finals!
The Republic of Korea team would sweep all five events with five Olympic Gold medals.
Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin both stood out. She amazingly won 3 Gold medals in the following events: Women’s Team, Women’s Individual and the Mixed Team.
Kim Woojin was magnificent, also winning 3 Gold medals in the Men’s Individual, Men’s Team and Mixed Team events.
Brady Ellison would add two more medals to his collection, barely losing the Men’s Individual gold to Kim Woojin by millimeters.
There were some challenging conditions along the way with both rain and wind at the Esplanade des Invalides venue. However that did not stop the Koreans from realizing their dreams of Olympic Gold in archery!
Olympic Medals in Archery: Recurve Men’s Individual
- Gold – Republic of Korea: Kim Woojin
- Silver – USA: Brady Ellison
- Bronze – Republic of Korea: Lee Wooseik
4th – Germany: Florian Unruh
7th – Turkey: Mete Gazoz
9th – Canada: Eric Peters
In a nail biting final Kim Woojin narrowly beat Brady Ellison of the USA by a few millimeters. This was Brady Ellison’s fifth Olympic games. The match was close going to a fifth decisive set. Both archers would shoot a perfect 30, so the match went to a final single shot, win takes gold. Both men shot a 10 however Woojin was closer, thus winning the gold.
This is Kim Woojin’s third gold medal of the Paris games, with a total of five Olympic gold medals. This was Ellison’s second medal of the games, receiving a bronze with Casey Kaufhold in the Mixed Team event.
Lee Wooseik would beat Germany’s Florian Unruh for the bronze medal.
Olympic Medals in Archery: Recurve Women’s Individual
- Gold – Republic of Korea: Lim Sihyeon
- Silver – Republic of Korea: Nam Suhyeon
- Bronze – France: Lisa Barbelin
4th – Korea: Hunyoung Jeon (losing bronze to Lisa Barbelin)
Other notable finishes were Deepika Kumari (India) in 7th and in 9th place, Megan Havers of Great Britain. Catalina Gnoriega (USA) and Casey Kaufhold (USA) would tie for 17th place overall.
The Republic of Korea women would dominate in this event, nearly sweeping all three medals. The gold medal match was the first all-Republic of Korea final in 20 years.
The Republic of Korea’s Lim Sihyeon would win in the women’s individual event. This would give her a third gold medal in archery at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Lim defeated her teammate Nam Suhyeon, who would win the silver medal.
The Koreans nearly swept the event with a very close match for the bronze medal. Lisa Barbelin of France won the bronze by beating Republic of Korea archer Jeon Hun-young.

Olympic Medals in Archery: Recurve Men’s Team

- Gold – Republic of Korea: Kim Woojin, Lee Wooseik, Kim Je Deok
- Silver – France: Baptiste Addis, Thomas Chirault, Jean-Charles Valladont
- Bronze – Turkey (Türkiye): Mete Gazoz, BerkimTumer, Abdullah Yildirmis
The Chinese team would end up in 4th place after losing to Turkey in the bronze medal match. India and Italy finished strong in 5th and 6th place, respectively.
The Republic of Korea men’s archery team continue to dominate this event. The Koreans have now won three consecutive medals in the men’s team event.
The French team were thrilled to win the silver medal in front of their home crowd in Paris.
Olympic Medals in Archery: Recurve Women’s Team
- Gold – Republic of Korea: Lim Sihyeon, Nam Suhyeon and Jeon Hunyoung
- Silver – China: An Qixuan, Li Jiaman and Yang Xiaolei
- Bronze – Mexico: Angela Ruiz, Alejandra Valencia and Ana Vazquez
The Netherlands would lose out to Mexico in the bronze medal match. Finishing in 9th place were the teams from USA, France and Great Britain.
The Republic of Korea team would narrowly beat the People’s Republic of China team, coming down to a judge’s review. The win would give the Republic of Korea team their tenth consecutive gold medal in women’s archery team event.
The People’s Republic of China team would come back to win the 3rd and 4th set three, after losing the first two sets. This would force a shoot-off.
It took a judge’s review to confirm Korea’s win, after the final arrow was shot.
Olympic Medals in Archery: Mixed Team
- Gold – Republic of Korea: Lim Sihyeon and Kim Woojin
- Silver – Germany: Michelle Kroppen and Florian Unruh
- Bronze – USA: Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold
This was the second time the mixed team event was held at the Olympic Games. It was also the second time the Republic of Korea have won gold in the event.
India’s team of Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat would lose to the USA in the bronze medal match, placing 4th overall.
Despite windy conditions, the Republic of Korea team were able to beat the German team in three straight sets.
Kaufhold and Ellison would win the bronze medal for USA.
Casey Kaufhold became the first female US archer to win a medal since 1988. In the Seoul Olympics, the USA women’s team would win a bronze medal.
